History
Explore Atlanta’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)
Beef up your brain muscles and explore the paths of both known and unknown heroes by learning more about the many colleges and universities that help make Atlanta a smart place. Great places with rich histories include Morris Brown College and Morehouse School of Medicine as well as Spelman College, Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta University, all originally part of the Atlanta University Center Consortium (AUC).
The Federal Reserve Bank Money Museum
Visit the Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta and learn that money doesn’t grow on trees. Located in Midtown Atlanta, the Federal Reserve Bank Money Museum will help you gain an appreciation for the life cycle of money.
Georgia State Capitol tour

Historic Oakland Cemetery
Let the spirit (or spirits in this case) move you at Historic Oakland Cemetery. Take part in one of the cemeteries traditions – visitors are known to leave a golf tee at the resting place of Bobby Jones, while others leave a coin at the grave of author Margaret Mitchell.
Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park
The national historic site includes year-round tours of Dr. King’s birth home, the church where his father preached – Ebenezer Baptist Church – his and wife Coretta Scott King’s final resting places, the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame and the Visitor Center exhibiting civil rights memorabilia. Located on the same block, and also with free admission, is the The King Center where you can see Martin Luther King Jr.’s Nobel Peace Prize on display.
Explore the Sweet Auburn District
Sweet Auburn Historic District reflects the history, heritage and achievements of Atlanta’s African Americans. It was named Sweet Auburn by the unofficial mayor, John Wesley Dobbs. Auburn Avenue was once dubbed “the richest Negro street in the world” by FORTUNE magazine.
Parks and Outdoors
Walking, biking and even fishing at Piedmont Park
Located just 2 miles from downtown, Piedmont Park is one of the largest green spaces in the city and includes playgrounds for children of varying ages, baseball, soccer and football fields, and public tennis courts.
- Piedmont Park’s sidewalks are one of many PATH trails for pedestrians, bikers and rollerbladers. Other in-town PATH trails include the Westside Trail and the Chastain Park Trail.
- Your pup can get in on the free action too, at the Piedmont Park Dog Park, an enclosed area where dogs can play off-leash.
- Lake Clara Meer is routinely stocked with fish, including large mouth bass, crappie, bream and catfish, and it attracts anglers of all ages. A valid Georgia fishing license is needed to fish in Piedmont Park.
Play games at Woodruff Park
Woodruff Park is one of downtown Atlanta’s most significant green spaces and a great place to soak up Atlanta.
- Borrow free board games, lawn games, and sporting equipment from the Game Cart.
- Kids can play at the cool ‘ATL’ playground.
- Connect to the free wi-fi and workout at the ENERGI fitness station.
Jimmy Carter Presidential Library & Gardens
While there is an admission cost to get into the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library, guests are able to explore the gardens for free. Even better – bring a fishing pole and bait and see if you can catch a fish in the stocked ponds.

Window shopping and festivities at Atlantic Station
There’s so much to do in Atlantic Station that the area has its own ZIP code. Relax without spending a dime! Window shop or check out free movies and the open air market. In warmer weather, bring your yoga mat over for Wellness Wednesdays.
