Atlanta is exactly where an art enthusiast should be. The city has always had a great art scene, thanks to stalwarts like the High Museum of Art and Atlanta Contemporary, as well as a vibrant community of artisans. Recent years have brought a slew of cool hotels that practically double as galleries. Seriously: In many of these hotels you can even purchase a work of art if you want a piece of Atlanta to take home. Here are eight hotels designed with art lovers in mind.
The Darwin Hotel
You can’t miss the stunning tribute to Atlanta’s history when you enter The Darwin Hotel in Old Fourth Ward. A mural of civil rights hero and U.S. congressman John Lewis, painted by local artist Lauren Pallotta Stumberg, towers above the lobby adding a strong burst of color while reminding you that while Atlanta is ever-evolving, it’s also rooted in history. Other local artists are on display throughout the hotel as well.
FORTH Atlanta
FORTH, a hotel-meets-social club, puts you in the heart of the action right on the Atlanta Beltline. One of the most unique pieces of art within the hotel resides in the concierge suite: a diorama by Sisal Creative. It’s an ethereal mountain scene filled with taxidermy foxes, butterflies and moths — the longer you look, the more details you notice. It’s certainly not something you’ll find anywhere else in town.
Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta
Located in Midtown, the neoclassical Four Seasons is a piece of art itself with a grand marble staircase, marble flooring and a dramatic crystal chandelier. There’s more, though. On the fifth-floor terrace, a mural by Atlanta artist Carl Linstrum graces the wall. Botanical with blue and grey tones, it’s a sight to behold and ties in perfectly with the nature found just outside.
Hotel Colee
In Buckhead, Hotel Colee’s lobby welcomes you with bold colors and plenty of personality. That’s reflected in its art program, curated by the Print Shop and FreeMarket Gallery (both owned by Atlantan Parsa Behnamiri). The rotating art display puts Atlantans like Yoyo Ferro, Niki Zarrabi, Dr. Dax and Angela Faustina front and center.
Hotel Granada
Hotel Granada opened its doors in Midtown earlier this summer within a Spanish Colonial-inspired gem. The 100-year-old building is a model of preservation, and more treats await inside. There’s the original mosaic inlay tile at the threshold that spells “Granada” (the name of the apartment building that first occupied the space), and there are lots of local artists featured throughout.
The hotel worked with the Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) to curate the paintings found in the public spaces. The guest rooms feature paintings by local artists, and pieces by local ceramicist Kate Troisi can be found in the lobby and coffee shop. The hotel also sits near the High Museum of Art so you’re never far from beauty.
The Georgian Terrace
Built in the Beaux-Arts style, The Georgian Terrace evokes images of grand hotels in Paris, bolstered by the fact that it’s situated in Midtown across the street from the iconic Fox Theatre. The hotel exudes glamour, and, as a bonus, there’s plenty of art on the walls. The property partners with SCAD to showcase emerging artists, including painters and photographers.
Nobu Atlanta
You’ll find Nobu Atlanta at Phipps Plaza where the hotel brand delights with Japanese-inspired architecture. Although it’s a global brand, local artists were tapped to create unique pieces, the most notable of which is Christina Kwan’s black and gold mural at the lobby’s entrance. Keep an eye out for a 12-foot wide river rock sculpture created by Kevin Chambers, too, which adds to the soothing, earthy ambiance.
Signia by Hilton Atlanta
The recently opened Signia by Hilton Atlanta boasts nearly 1,000 guest rooms and ample meeting spaces, but with its attention to art, it’s easy to mistake it for a museum. There are more than 70 pieces of art in varying mediums found throughout the hotel, starting with a ginormous sculpture weaving through the lobby lights, which makes quite the statement when you walk in. A handy guide ensures you catch it all. Find it on the Signia by Hilton website.
St. Regis Atlanta
The elegant Buckhead hotel welcomes you with a bronze Phillip Jackson sculpture, “Gale Force Nunn II,” depicting a nun in a windswept habit, placed squarely in the lobby. It’s an alluring taste of what’s to come, but to find it, you’ll have to visit Atlas. The Michelin-starred restaurant adorns its walls with original pieces by the likes of Chagall, Picasso and Francis Bacon, all from the Lewis Collection (one of the largest private art collections). You never know what you’re going to see when you dine in the lauded restaurant — the artwork and the dishes change often — but you’ll certainly enjoy a culinary feast as well as a visual feast.
Thompson Atlanta – Buckhead
Located in a residential part of Buckhead — but still close to the neighborhood’s exciting offerings — the Thompson contains a treasure trove of art, many by local and regional artists. Examples of works you’ll find throughout the hotel include black and white abstracts by Atlantan Paige Follmann, a piece made of laser-cut pine by Lou Verne, and a stunning hanging sculpture of wood and graphite by Justin W. Archer, a professor at SCAD.
