Reasons to Visit the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park

1. The Martin Luther King Jr. birth home is where Dr. King was born and lived during the first 12 years of his life. Visit historic Fire Station No. 6, one of the South’s first desegregated firehouses, on your way to Dr. King’s birth home. 
2. Enjoy the roses and fountain at the International World Peace Rose Garden and view the “Behold” Monument. 
3. Listen to the sermons and speeches of Dr. King at Ebenezer Baptist Church. Browse exhibits about the history of the church or watch a video of Dr. King’s sister as she talks about her family and the church. 
4. Visit The King Center, which continues to spread the nonviolent ministry through educational and inspirational materials, including audio, video and the preserved writings of Dr. King. Pay your respects at Dr. and Mrs. King’s Tomb and view the Eternal Flame.

Insider Tips

• The National Park Service offers free, guided tours of Dr. King’s birth home. Pick up a timed ticket at the information desk inside the Visitor Center or King Center.
• Birth Home Tours are limited to 15 people and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of the tour. Visit early in the week or Sunday morning and visit early in the day to secure your spot.
• Fuel up beforehand at Sweet Auburn Bread Co. with a breakfast sandwich or a delicious muffin. (Our personal favorite is The Naked Hummingbird.) You will also want to try the amazing assortment of desserts, including pound cakes, pies and cheesecakes.
• Head down the road to the APEX Museum for untold stories of Atlanta’s past, along with exhibits and tours showcasing African American history and culture.
• Visit the Sweet Auburn Curb Market for a taste of history along with fresh produce, baked goods and one killer burger from Grindhouse.

Know Before You Go

When is the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Park Open?

• The National Park Service Visitor Center, historic Ebenezer Baptist Church and Freedom Hall are open Monday – Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• The birth home of Martin Luther King Jr. is open for ranger-led tours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
• Fire Station No. 6 is staffed by park volunteers and is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. when volunteers are available. Closed on Sunday.
• All facilities are closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

The entrance to the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park parking lot is located on John Wesley Dobbs Avenue. Start your visit at the National Park Service Visitor Center, which is a short walk across Irwin Street and down the Promenade. Here, you can pick up maps and get the latest information on the park.
